The curved down tube allows fork clearance without jacking up the front end, the short back end has lots of mud room, and there are two sets of bottle bosses but no rack eyelets on the seatstays. This is a that steers like a 26er but still has the smooth confident roll that makes bigger wheels popular with so many riders. Great for beginners, which I am. Considering the need for upgrades, I can't justify five chilis. I'm already thinking of upgrading to something twice the price, but for the money it's a great bike. So I'm glad I got this Marlin 5, handles excellent and love the 29 inch wheels.

Cycling Plus is the manual for the modern road cyclist. The build was great and rides well. Even before I converted it into a fixie the chain would slack out every time I tightened it up. I ride 3-4 times a week on advanced trails and this bike was clearly not meant for it. Trek Marlin 5 2018 Mountain Bike scored 98% in our price rank check, which puts it right up there in the top few products in the Cycling category.

I haven't had any real problems with this bike either, except for the fact that the suspension fork only has the options open or closed. Nice feature of locking front shocks for uphill climbs and road riding. Also, the steering is loose possibly bearings again. Oh, im 6' 175lbs if that matters. I currently have a Maxxis crossmark in the front and a Schwalbe Rocket Ron on the rear.

After taking it out on some blues, blacks, and jump trails, this bike completely failed me. Cons: None for a bike in this price range. This score is reached from a combination of product testing, customer reviews, expert reviews, brand reputation and 3rd party product tests. The stock tires are realllly bad! The stock brakes are fine but sketchy on downhill sections. This article was originally published in magazine, available on and.

Yesterday I was riding and the chain came off, I flipped the bike and when I got up the rear wheel was gone. I will be upgrading the seat to something harder. I believe everything else is the same as the 5. The fork is tolerable but if I ever see a sweat deal on a 100 mm G2 fork upgrade, I'm on that. After one ride on modest trails, I returned the bike. The chain stretching ruined my back cassete and I had to replace it. I just checked the trek site and itlooks to me like the wheels are the same on the 6 and 7. This allows me to accelerate on the Marlin ridiculously fast and was a game changer on the trail when it came to racing. Probably will have to upgrade soon, however.

I also like the maxxis tires i have on it. Our verdict based on price, quality and the overall score suggests that the Trek Marlin 5 2018 Mountain Bike is a real winner. The brakes squealed loudly from the first few miles, too. I'm almost sold on the 6 now, especially since it's the only model that has a color scheme I love. My main uses are for commuting to work, and attaching a trailer for riding with my kid, and some light mountain biking. My final mods to this bike would probably have to a manitou pro 29er front fork and some better wheels.

This combined with the Alpha Series Aluminum frame means that the bike feels fantastic and stands the test of time without the massive weight penalty that is often associated with other bikes at this price point. This review is designed to help you find that perfect product before you part with your hard earned cash. It feels like there is a spring but nothing else inside, so you get rebound shocks which basically offset any potential benefits from the shock. Buy it if you want a reliable, responsive, predictably quick ride. If you are going to buy one, look at the rear drop out and how much of the aluminum the quick release actually grabs on the chain tension assembly - not very much. This thing just rips now. Upgrade the grips to some lock-ons and fit some grippier pedals to tackle more advanced trails.

If you are looking to get into single speeding this bike is definitely a great value. Would not recommend if you are going to use it on fairly aggressive trails. The answer is: shockingly bad. The Monocog has restored my faith, though! The front and rear derailleur work but they are the cheapest for a reason. This bike is perfect for beginner and intermediate trails, but it will also be fine on advanced lines if you ride smooth and don't case jumps or slam into rocks.
